Wine Becomes Art at SLOMA

Wine Becomes Art is an exhibit featuring original works and art etchings on wine bottles at the SLO Museum of Art in San Luis Obispo.

Wine Becomes Art is the culmination of artists and winemakers tying their artistic craftsmanship together to create works of art while helping to promote the Central Coast wine industry. Through the lens of three community-wide organizations, the Central Coast Wine Classic, the Edna Valley Arroyo Grande Valley Vintners and Growers Association (now SLO Wine Country) and the Mano Tinta Project, Wine Becomes Art showcases the synergy of the creative process of winemaking and the visual arts.

The exhibit includes original works by Michael Masicampo, an artist who worked as a cellar hand for Edna Valley Vineyard in the early 90s, whose art was featured in the very first Harvest Celebration events hosted by the then Edna Valley Arroyo Grande Valley Vintners and Growers Association.

Also on display is the Mano Tinta Project, a charity wine project produced by Talley Vineyards, which features local artists’ label designs and original works.  Proceeds from the sales of Mano Tinta support The Fund for Vineyard and Farm Workers, an endowment that benefits farm workers in San Luis Obispo County.

Wine Becomes Art also features original paintings, sculptures, and etched bottles from the KCBX and Central Coast Wine Classics (1985-2017), founded by Archie McLaren and Larry Shupnick including Candice Norcross, James-Paul Brown, Carissa Chappellet, Gary Conway, Tim Lloyd, Colleen Gnos, and Yuroz. The Wine Classics celebrated artists who designed labels, etched bottles, created sculpture, paintings, graphics, surfboards, auction catalogs and awards for events. The Wine Classic also celebrated the artisan winemakers who created award-winning wines in San Luis Obispo County, now recognized all over the world.
