To serve Caterina’s Polenta you must have a china plate in your hand to serve yourself. Place one scoop of polenta in the middle of your plate. Select which type of stew you want and place a hefty scoop of stew on top of your scoop of polenta. Top the stew with a thick slice of Teleme or Telligio Cheese, and then put another scoop of polenta on top. Mangia! You can also substitute Gorgonzola Cheese for Teleme Cheese.
This giant Welcome sign leads us to two good wine country stories. One is the sign itself, the other is the famous author of the sign’s displayed quote. Sonoma County has its Valley of the Moon wine country and Jack London. Napa Valley has Robert Louis Stevenson.
Caterina had a strong work ethic which inspired her three sons and her grandchildren to pursue the demanding work in their careers no matter what the obstacles.
In 1882 Andrew York purchased land in the Santa Lucia Mountains, northeast of Cayucos and established the vineyards that would become Ascension Winery in 1895. He soon renamed it York Winery, and the York family occupied this land, grew grapes, and made Zinfandel wine for three generations.
Soon after the discovery of gold in the Sierra Nevada foothills, it was discovered that the small valleys and foothills of the Mother Lode could be planted to grains, fruits, and wine grapes. Within a few years a number of vineyards were planted and small wineries erected, and as the mining activities prospered so did the winegrowers.
AN INTRODUCTION to myself and my wine postcards :: Following my first visit and taste of Northern California wine country in the 1960s, collecting and studying the history of this exciting new world fast became an absorbing passion. Vacations took my husband and me on visits to most of the wineries all over the state, gathering winery-offered brochures, wine labels, postcards. Searching the “old postcard” stalls at statewide Paper & Ephemera Fairs taught me early on the rare historical value of vintage California wine postcards. Today the collection has some 2200 cataloged postcards, acknowledged the largest in the world. These invaluable treasures will one day proudly reside at UC Davis-Special Collections. But until that time, it will be a great pleasure to share a monthly postcard story of California’s wine history

Janell was born into the fourth generation of a famous Italian family who settled in Paso Robles and Templeton in San Luis Obispo County in the 1920s. She was born and raised in the Dante Dusi Vineyard and by the age of 12 knew she wanted to pursue winemaking. Dante was her mentor.
The Wine History Project Honors Vicki Carroll as a wine educator in San Luis Obispo County who promoted local winemakers, growers and agriculture in the 1990s. She founded her own marketing consulting firm before becoming the President and Executive Director of Hospice du Rhône with the mission of improving the business conditions for grape growers and wine producers of Rhône variety wines and grapes throughout the world.
