The Wine History Project of San Luis Obispo County retains in its archival collection eighteen black and white glossy photographs. These professionally taken photographs include images portraying wine making from between the mid-1940s and early 1950s. The Wine History Project obtained these photographs from a collector who presented them to us. They appear to be promotional pieces from the Wine Institute for the wine industry.

As the advocacy group for the California wine industry, the Wine Institute has helped guide the wine industry since its founding in 1934, shortly after the repeal of Prohibition in the United States. With the enactment of the 21st Amendment, the wine industry of California began the task of rebuilding.

It was in 1949 that the Wine Institute adopted principles of good advertising practices for the wine industry, which were later published as the Wine Institute Code of Advertising Standards. The Wine Institute documents that in 1954, as tasting rooms grew in number, California wineries were visited by 250,000 visitors as travel destinations.
