The San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival (later named Festival Mozaic) was founded in 1970 by Clif Swanson to present an annual summer music festival honoring Mozart and serving the community of San Luis Obispo. In 1970 the first festival presented three concerts. By 1983, the Festival had grown to a week long event with 18 concerts located throughout the county. In addition to presenting high quality performances, the Festival promoted education in music including instrumental workshops, lectures, a children’s concert, and concerts at public schools. They were located in a variety of historic venues including Hearst Castle, the missions and historic landmarks. Among our local winemakers and winery owners there are many musicians and music lovers. The first major philanthropy almost universally supported by the wine industry developed around musical events. We are proud to share the names of the wineries and families who supported the Mozart Festival from 1974 to 2005.
