San Luis Obispo County has been home to planting over 125 varieties of grapes during the last 150 years. There are many microclimates and soils that make it possible for dry farming. Currently, the Paso Wine Alliance reports that 40,000 vineyard acres are planted in the Paso Robles AVA, which is 614,000 acres in total. The major grape varieties planted in the Paso Robles AVA are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot. Zinfandel, Syrah, and Chardonnay and the category below, Other Red, which includes Petite Sirah, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Mourvedre, and Petit Verdot, among others.
