September is California Wine Month; it’s a time to raise a glass to the Golden State’s rich and diverse winemaking tradition! With over 139 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) spread across 800 miles, California is the undisputed leader in wine production in the United States, accounting for a staggering 81% of the country’s total wine output.

A History Steeped In Wine

The story of wine in California begins with the Spanish missionaries. When they established their California Missions, they brought the art of viticulture and established Mission vineyards and grapes. Mission San Luis Obispo, in particular, was renowned for its extensive grape growing and winemaking operations, second only to Mission San Gabriel.

 A Growing Legacy

Over the centuries, grape growing in San Luis Obispo County has continued to flourish. Today, wine country stretching from Edna Valley to Paso Robles and beyond is home to numerous world-class wineries that produce a wide variety of wines. A few local wineries were even presented at the White House! Our growing wine region continues to make an impact on a local and global scale.
